Quartz components for solar cell manufacturing

Solar Photovoltaic Quartz

Quartz glass is used across solar cell manufacturing: crucibles for CZ, MCZ, and DS silicon crystal growth, process tubes and wafer boats for diffusion, and liners, carriers, paddles, and fixtures for deposition and other thermal steps. High-purity fused silica (SiO₂ ≥ 99.99%) withstands the temperatures and keeps metallic contamination low, which protects carrier lifetime and cell efficiency.

FGQuartz supplies these components from stock sizes or to your drawing: any geometry that can be formed or machined from fused silica, with feasibility confirmed in DFM review and prototypes from one piece. Quotes are typically returned within 24 business hours.

Quartz components used in solar photovoltaic manufacturing: crucible, diffusion tube, and wafer boat

Quick answer

Where is quartz glass used in solar cell manufacturing? In crystal growth (crucibles), diffusion and other thermal steps (process tubes, wafer boats, paddles, fixtures), and deposition steps (liners and carriers). Quartz tolerates the process temperatures and keeps metal contamination low, which protects minority-carrier lifetime and cell efficiency.

Key takeaways

  • FGQuartz makes CZ crucibles up to 32 in (800 mm) and larger, matched to the puller capacity and thermal profile.
  • Solar wafer boats are typically designed for high-density, back-to-back loading to maximize throughput, whereas semiconductor boats prioritize precise single-wafer spacing.
  • Diffusion tubes and boats are made for POCl₃ and other solar diffusion chemistries, and for the thermal steps of TOPCon, HJT, and BC lines.
  • Quartz is not used in hot alkaline (KOH or NaOH) texturing baths, and it is attacked by HF and hot concentrated phosphoric acid.

Why do solar lines use quartz?

Why quartz

Property data is on the technical specifications page.

Problem Why ordinary materials struggle How fused silica helps
Holding molten silicon Most containers contaminate the melt or fail at silicon melting temperature. High-purity fused silica crucibles, including CZ-grade double-layer construction, keep contamination low.
Metal contamination during diffusion Iron, copper, and nickel create recombination centers that cut carrier lifetime. SiO₂ ≥ 99.99% with controlled metallic impurities keeps contamination off the wafer.
Thermal cycling in continuous production Repeated heating and cooling cracks or distorts many materials. Thermal expansion of 5.5 × 10⁻⁷ /°C keeps geometry stable through cycles.
Aggressive process chemistry POCl₃ and boron chemistries attack many surfaces; boron is harder on quartz than phosphorus. Fused silica is inert to the process gases, and boat and tube life can be planned for the harsher boron steps.
High-volume cost pressure Consumables must last and loading density must be high. Slot geometry and tube design are matched to the wafer format and the line, for density and service life.

CZ crucibles run near and above the melting point of silicon (about 1414°C), beyond the 1200°C continuous rating of standard quartz parts, and are consumables made for a pulling run.

How is quartz used at each solar manufacturing step?

Process steps

The four steps below cover most solar quartz demand.

Crystal growth: CZ, MCZ, and DS

Workflow

  1. Load polysilicon into the crucible
  2. Melt it
  3. Pull a monocrystalline ingot (CZ / MCZ) or solidify a multicrystalline block (DS)
  4. Cool and remove
Point Detail
Where quartz is used Quartz crucibles for CZ, MCZ, and DS.
Why quartz High-temperature strength, controlled bubble content, and low contamination of the melt. CZ crucibles are double-layer: an opaque outer layer for insulation and a clear, bubble-free inner layer that touches the melt.
Watch-outs Crucible diameter and wall are matched to the puller and its thermal profile. CZ crucibles are generally single-use. Standard crucibles typically ship in 7–14 days; custom sizes take about 3–6 weeks.

Diffusion and emitter formation

Workflow

  1. Load wafers into a boat
  2. Push the boat into the furnace tube
  3. Diffuse with POCl₃ or a boron source
  4. Unload
Point Detail
Where quartz is used Diffusion tubes, wafer boats, and push paddles and support rods.
Why quartz Thermal uniformity, long service life, and inertness to the process chemistry. Tubes and boats are made for POCl₃ and other solar diffusion chemistries.
Watch-outs Slot geometry is matched to the wafer format, and boats are typically high-density and back-to-back. Boron diffusion on TOPCon lines is more aggressive on quartz than phosphorus, so plan tube and boat life for it.

LPCVD, tunnel oxide, and polysilicon steps

Workflow

  1. Load wafers
  2. Grow tunnel oxide or deposit polysilicon at temperature
  3. Unload and clean
Point Detail
Where quartz is used Process tubes, boats, and liners for the LPCVD and oxidation steps used in TOPCon-type lines.
Why quartz A clean high-temperature environment compatible with the process gases.
Watch-outs Tube and boat cleanliness matters more as the number of high-temperature steps rises. Specify the equipment platform and wafer format.

PECVD, passivation, and other thermal steps

Workflow

  1. Load wafers or carriers
  2. Deposit the anti-reflection or passivation layer
  3. Anneal or treat as the line requires
Point Detail
Where quartz is used Liners, carriers, and chamber components made to match the equipment platform, plus handling paddles and fixtures.
Why quartz Clean surfaces and dimensional compatibility with existing tools.
Watch-outs Process tubes, boats, and custom fixtures are adapted to the thermal steps of TOPCon, HJT, and BC lines. Send the drawing or a worn sample.

When quartz is not the right choice

Limits

Quartz is chosen for purity, thermal stability, and chemical inertness. It is not suited to every environment.

If your process involves… Quartz suitability Consider
HF (hydrofluoric acid) Not suitable. HF attacks fused silica. An HF-compatible material, such as a fluoropolymer
Hot concentrated phosphoric acid Not suitable. A compatible material for the bath
Hot strong alkalis (for example hot KOH or NaOH) Not suitable; quartz is attacked. A compatible material for the bath
Continuous service above about 1200°C Beyond the continuous working limit of fused silica. A higher-temperature ceramic

Solar wet-process steps use quartz only for chemistries that suit it. Hot alkaline texturing baths do not.

Can FGQuartz make my solar quartz part if it is not on the list?

Custom parts

FGQuartz builds fused silica components to drawing in any geometry that can be formed or machined from fused silica, and confirms feasibility in DFM review. There are three paths:

  1. Use a standard item from the product pages.
  2. Modify a standard item: a different size, a port, a flange, a lid, or a changed slot or hole pattern.
  3. Build to your drawing, sketch, or sample: DXF, STEP, IGES, PDF, a dimensioned sketch, or a worn sample with key dimensions.

Commonly requested

  • Boats for a new wafer format, pitch, or loading density
  • Crucibles in non-standard diameters for a specific puller
  • Liners, carriers, push paddles, and tool-specific fixtures
  • Replacements for discontinued or worn parts, reproduced from a sample

Prototypes start from one piece. Simpler custom parts typically take 7–14 days and complex assemblies 3–6 weeks. See custom quartz glass fabrication, thermal processing, and cold processing.
